About APRU

Who We Are

Formed in 1997, the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) is a consortium of 37 leading research universities in the Pacific Rim. APRU aims to foster education, research and enterprise thereby contributing to the economic, scientific and cultural advancement in the Pacific Rim.

Objectives

APRU aims to promote scientific, educational and cultural collaboration among Pacific Rim economies. In both its objectives and guiding principles, APRU embodies a commitment to global academic and research standards.

APRU recognizes that its activities can be powerful catalysts for expanding educational, economic, and technological cooperation among the Pacific Rim economies. In this regard, the association seeks to promote dialogue and collaboration between academic institutions in Pacific Rim economies so that they can become effective players in the global knowledge economy.

International Relations

Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation

APRU's objectives are supportive of those of APEC in encouraging cooperation within the Pacific Rim. The contribution of APRU has been acknowledged by APEC. In the last few years, APRU has participated and contributed papers in several APEC forums and working groups.

Association of American Universities

Following APRU's involvement in past AAU meetings in the U.S., the AAU and APRU held a joint AAU-APRU Presidents Roundtable for the first time in Asia on 30 June to 1 July, 2005.  Hosted by National University of Singapore, members of the two consortia discussed trends and developments in higher education and globalization.  A rare opportunity for university presidents from America, Asia and Australasia to engage one another, APRU looks forward to future collaborative efforts between the members of both AAU and APRU.
